Arundel and South Downs MP, Andrew Griffith, has paid tribute to former Arundel and South Downs MP Lord Howard Flight who passed away on 24th January at the age of 77.
Mr Griffith marked the sad news by expressing his deepest condolences to Lady Christabel Flight and their family.
Lord Flight was the first Arundel and South Downs MP, elected in 1997 when the Westminster boundaries were redrawn. He served his constituency for 7 years, until 2005, and there will be many residents who will remember him.
He held posts in the Shadow cabinet, as Shadow Economic Secretary to the Treasury from 1999 to 2001, Shadow Paymaster General from 2001 to 2002, and Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 2002 to 2004.
In 2010 he was given a life peerage with the title Baron Flight, of Worcester in the County of Worcestershire, and he sat in the House of Lords as a Conservative peer. He continued with his business interests including as chairman of the Entrepreneurs Investment Scheme.
Andrew Griffith said:
“I am saddened by the news of Lord Flight’s death. He was a remarkable and memorable figure in politics – both as an MP and as a life peer. He was one of a rare breed of politicians, having come from business first. His entrepreneurial background helped to define his style of politics, and we are grateful for his public service in the Conservative tradition of responsibility.”
“On behalf of colleagues and the Conservative family, I would like to pay our respects to his memory and service, and our sincere condolences to his wife Lady Christabel and their family.”
