Andrew Griffith shares some new year's resolutions for 2026 and says that if the government adopted these it would make people's lives better and would have his full support.
In his article for Sussex newspapers, Andrew says he is an optimist and looks forward to the year ahead with hope. While acknowledging that his party differs from the government. he says that as a patriot he does not want the country to fail to grow its economy, for his constituents to be worse off, or for the users of public services to suffer poor service.
The five resolutions he sets out are;
1. Acknowledge the crisis in care for the elderly, the lack of sensible funding arrangements and the burdens on family and friends acting as unpaid carers. It’s a complex and long-term problem but it certainly won’t get better until the government acknowledges it and is willing to work on a cross party basis (as there was on capping the cost of care until the government broke the consensus on taking office).
2. Leave West Sussex alone. No one asked for a mayor, nor for our existing local councils to be chopped up into new odd, shaped pieces which will separate communities, cost ratepayers more and make things better not worse. Drop the distracting plans and focus on some real problems.
3. Sort out driving test delays. It’s far from the biggest problem we face but it is entirely fixable and a terrible experience for young people seeking their first independence.
4. Come up with a plan for the congested A27 at Arundel which impacts pollution in towns like Storrington. The governement cancelled the previous plans, now they must come up with their own solution.
5. Declare a moratorium on higher taxes whether hikes in business rates for pubs or property surcharge. People need to plan with certainty and its only that which will create the confidence to get people spending and the economy moving.
